Miami Lyric Opera Presents "Madama Butterfly"
"Madama Butterfly"is the timeless story of an opportunistic American Navy Officer who meets and weds a 15 year old young Geisha, converting her to Christianity and banishing her relatives from their lives. After a brief time the Officer leaves Japan for America promising to return “when the robins nest again” – the Geisha gives birth to a child fathered by the American Officer. When he returns three years later with his “American Wife” tragedy envelops the Geisha as she defends her honor – making for an incredible aria and some of the most beloved music in the repertoire of modern Opera.
